Startup Profile of MyNyte
MyNyte is a location-based social mobile network, with traditional web support. MyNyte was built to be the best social media platform designed to help you go out. From your online profile to your phone, your entire night is set in one place. Instead of wasting time texting, emailing, Facebooking and calling all your friends, you can simply use MyNyte to put together a group and say where to be and when. MyNyte knows where users PLAN to go, making it easy to find the hot spot BEFORE the night starts so you don’t miss the action. I recently sat down with Jimmy Caylor, co-founder or MyNyte to learn about how the company was started, how it operates, and what is in store for the future.
Tell us about yourself first. What is your history? Where did you go to school and work in the past?
My name is Jimmy Caylor, I’m 27 years old and from Tampa, Florida. I graduated from the University of South Florida in December of 2009. I started working as a caddie at an exclusive golf club in my hometown midway through 2009. Meeting and talking to a lot of the people I caddied for, changed my life forever. I wanted to live life at the same level as some of these people and I realized very quickly that an ordinary occupation wasn’t going to fulfill that wish.
Who have been your business startup inspirations? Did you learn anything from them specifically?
My inspirations began coming from certain clients of mine that seemed to intrigue me the most. It wasn’t the athletes or celebrities, it was the businessmen. Instead of just keeping quiet and doing my job, I would ask questions when the opportunity was right. Time after time I was hearing the same response, “I started my own business.” The most important concept I was gathering from these conversations at the time was that I needed to start my own business. From that point on I started to pay attention to every little thing these guys would talk about. Eventually, there came a turning point where I finally realized my dream. Out of all the extremely successful businessmen I caddied for, a few select people stood out and became my real inspiration. Each of them had two things in common. The first, they all founded a business and sold that business for nine figures. The second, each of their businesses were internet companies. That was it. I was going to start an internet company.
What was your inspiration to start your company?
The idea for creating a product like MyNyte came from a personal experience and in a manner that many other great ideas were conceived, running into a problem.
Tell us how your company started and when. Who was involved and what did each person do?
Day one of conversation began while attending an NHL hockey game one night in mid 2010. I was at the game with my best friend and now co-founder, Mike Bosso. We were planning on going out after the game, so when the second intermission rolled around, we began to try and figure out where we wanted to go. During that night of the week there were only two places that we were interested in going to. One was roughly a forty minute drive in the opposite direction of where we lived and the other was on the way home. If we were to go to the place that was far, we’d need to leave right after the game and would only have about two hours to party before they closed. We wanted to try something new for a change, but at the same time didn’t want to drive all the way to the new place if it wasn’t going to be packed with new faces. Long story short, this dilemma opened our eyes to the world of problems that we commonly run in to while trying to plan a night out.
Tell us an interesting story about your business. Were there any “wow” moments? Anything funny or unusual?
There’s an incredible coincidence about the night at the hockey game. Mike and I’s good friend that we called the next day to help us brainstorm over the new idea happened to be at the same game. His name is Chase Zimmerman and he is our third co-founder. All three of us spent countless hours constantly dreaming and calling each other with new ideas daily. On December 22, 2010 we pitched our business plan to an investor and were successful in our efforts. Perhaps the most unusual thing about this whole situation is that our investor was a partner in ownership of the NHL hockey team playing in the game we were at!
What is your role in the company now?
My current title in the company is co-founder. All three of us founders run the company in entirety and equality.
